Charcoal Art

Charcoal has remained a popular medium for drawing since the Renaissance. The medium is prized for its ability to produce an interplay between light and shadow known as chiaroscuro.

A good charcoal artist is able to create great levels of gradation in their work, by simply varying the pressure of their fingers, and even turning or rotating the coal can create a whole new kind of stroke on the surface of the work. Charcoal responds strongly to the texture of the paper it's being used on.

Pastel Art

Prized for its brilliant color, pastel was first used in the sixteenth century, notably by Leonardo da Vinci. It flourished in the eighteenth century, again in the late nineteenth century, and remains popular today. The optical vibrancy of a work in pastel results both from the absence of yellowing resins in its composition and the reflection of light from the innumerable facets of the finely ground powder.

Pastels are a medium that straddles the line between a drawing and a painting. The finished result can look just as luscious and luminescent as paintings, yet the process to create them resembles drawing more than painting.

 Biography

Kevin L. Hargrave: A Born Artist with a Flair for the Extraordinary

From the tender age of four, Kevin Hargrave often found himself in hot water with his father from drawing on the walls of the apartment they lived in. Raised in Salisbury, North Carolina, he drew inspiration from comic books and cartoons. Desirous of becoming a comic book artist, his destiny took a significant turn when his father introduced him to the late James Donaldson, a renowned artist from the area. This meeting was transformative for Kevin and turned his attention to learning portraiture. Today Kevin limits portraiture to animals but has also transitioned to rendering paintings of skylines, automobiles, and beaches. He works primarily in pastels and charcoal.
